Nepal - Kathmandu-Swayambunath

Day 15:
Kathmandu
Our flight from Delhi to Kathmandu has a 1.5 hour delay and we land at 23:15 h. in Kathmandu.
Because it is dark we can't see anything of Kathmandu.
Shortly after midnight we arrive at our Hotel Himalaya, they serve soup and bread for us.

Day 16: Our first impression of Kathmandu: it is totally different from India, much cleaner, less chaotic and no cows everywhere on the roads.
The Nepalese are less pretty than the Indians and they have Mongolian features.

Swayambunath
Our first visit today is to the Swayambunath temple.
These eyes on top of the stupa will be seen often in Nepal.
This Swayambunath temple is also called the "monkey temple", although there are only a few monkeys today.
But there are many cute Nepalese children ...

... and a lot of birds.

After Swayambunath we go to the old center of Kathmandu.

Nepal - Kathmandu

Day 16:
The old center of Kathmandu.
We seem to be entering a completely different world.
It is not comparable to anything we visited before.
Vegetable 'market'.
The Shiva Parvati temple with a Sadu.

Most Sadus appear to be fake Sadus, only begging for money if you want to take a photo. Real Sadus are not engaged in secular issues.
...
Entrance of the Talehu temple at Durbar Square.
Bicycle cab waiting for passengers.
In the background (at Durbar Square) the Maju Deval temple dedicated to Shiva. At the right a part of the Gaddi Baithak palace at the Basantapur square.

Plenty of souvenirs at the Basantapur square.

Tomorrow we will visit Bodhnath.

Nepal - Bodhnath

Day 17:
The Buddha stupa in Bodhnath.
Our first visit is to the Buddha stupa in Boudhanath also known as Bodhnath.
This Buddha stupa is the largest stupa in de Kathmandu valley.
Around this stupa live many Tibetans.
Walking prayer-rounds clockwise; in opposite direction brings bad luck!
During these walks around the stupa the buddhists turn the prayer-wheels in the walls of the stupa, or they turn their own small prayer-wheel.
Tibetan with a prayer-wheel.
Tibetan monks.
A giant prayer-wheel.
Meditation at the prayer-wheels.
Tibetans.
Tibetan monks.
Schoolchildren.
Old Tibetan monk.
This family is very willing to pose.
Is this cow walking prayer-rounds too?
Tibetan woman with her baby.

Two more Nepalese children.

After visiting Bodhnath we go to Pashupatinath.

Nepal - Pashupatinath

Day 17:
After Bodhnath we visit Pashupatinath.
Washing vegetables at the water-pump in the old city.
A lot of woodcarvings too.
What prospects do these children have?
Colourful.
As non-Hindu we are not allowed to enter the temple or holy grounds, therefore we cross the bridge to the other side of the holy Bagmati river.

Spectators at the cremations at the banks of the holy Bagmati.
Cremations at the banks of the holy Bagmati river.

Down the river are the socalled 'gaths' for the poor people.
A new pyre is being build ...
... and incended.
Upstream of the bridge the royal and rich people are cremated in front of the Hindu temple.
A body is washed and embalmed with Sandlewood-cream before the cremation.

The eldest son or the widow walks four times around the body in farewell, before the body is put on the pyre.

Deeply impressed by these ceremonies, we go to Bhaktapur.

Nepal - Bhaktapur

Day 17:
After Pashupatinath we visit Bhaktapur.
The whole city of Bhaktapur is a world heritage site.
You find yourself several centuries back in time.
'Hurry' is an unknown word here ...
Potter's square.
The Vatsala Durga Temple at Durbar Square.

(Yes, Bhaktapur has a Durbar Square too.)
Entrance of the Vatsala Durga Temple.

View on the Taumadhi Tole (square) from the restaurant.
View on the Taumadhi Tole (square) from the restaurant.
We were having lunch in this high restaurant, with a fantastic view on the Taumadhi Tole (square) and its inhabitants.
'Our' table top-left is still free, though this place is much frequented.
Just the two of us walking far away from the streets and squares visited by every tourist.
We walk into a side-street and encounter ...
... these fascinating pictures.

We never saw a pet in Nepal. Watch the cat on his lap.

A last photo before we are heading for Dhulikhel.

Nepal - Dhulikhel

Day 17:
At 17:00 h. we arrive at the Dhulikhel Mountain Resort.
View on the Himalaya from our cottage, just before sundown.
Day 18: A school in Dhulikhel.
Local inhabitants.

The peaks of the Himalaya tower above the low clouds.

From Dhulikhel we drive back to the Kathmandu airport.
We fly over the center of Kathmandu heading for Pokhara. Aerial photo of Kathmandu

Day 19: ...
View on the Himalaya mountains from our hotel in Pokhara.
Every weight is carried on the head.
During a mountain walk, Ria stayed behind and was pleasantly entertained by these Nepalese children ...

... and these.

Early next morning we drive from Pokhara to Chitwan.

Nepal - Chitwan

Day 20:
Early in the morning on the way from Pokhara to Chitwan.
In 1984 the Unesco declared the 'Royal Chitwan National Park' to be a World Heritage site.

Ria with her greatest (but one) love ...

Rhinoceros in Chitwan National Park.
Young rhinoceros in Chitwan National Park.
Day 21: Driving from Chitwan to Kathmandu, we have a short break in Muglin, ...
..., where four youngsters present an unexpected but pleasant amusement.
Exciting! Tomorrow we will climb the Mount Everest.

Nepal - Mount Everest

Day 22:
The climbing of the Mount Everest ...
... at our age we do it by airplane.
Aerial view on the Himalaya mountains.

After this exciting flight we visit Patan.

Nepal - Patan

Grocery market. Watch the 'sunscreens'.
Grocery market.
Grocery market.
Far away from the center we found these simple shops.
This is what we like most:

walking through markets and shopping streets without any other tourist...

Tomorrow one more time shopping in Kathmandu.

Nepal - Kathmandu

Day 23:
Once again to Kathmandu center
Today all temples are much more crowded than usually.
From a newspaper we learn it is the queen's birthday; for many Nepalese a reason to visit a temple to pray in favour of their queen.
A beautiful shop in the center.
Mark the electricity supply...
After visiting the old center, we fly in the evening from Kathmandu to Delhi in India.
to the next day in India
